Be A Volunteer

We need you.

Who can apply the program?

There are plenty of ways to get involved, whether it’s talking to someone over a cup of tea or helping out at the book shop and garden. Some roles require you to give a specific amount of time, or have particular skills. The description for each role will tell you what kind of time commitment or experience is required. Most roles just need your time and enthusiasm.

What is the benefits?

People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. For some it offers the chance to give something back to the community or make a difference to the people around them. For others it provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on existing experience and knowledge. Regardless of the motivation, what unites them all is that they find it both challenging and rewarding.

In Their Own Words

How To Apply?

Step 1: Find A Role

We value all types of experience, skills and knowledge. Many of our volunteer roles do not require specific qualifications or skills, while others require a person with talents in a particular area. We work with each individual volunteer to find a role that suits them.

You can choose to volunteer for any space of time, including once-off events, short term placements, or even ongoing roles that may continue for years.

Please note: Volunteer positions may not be available at all times. If there are no suitable volunteer opportunities available, please contact us.

Step 2: Apply

Once you've found a role you can apply through email or telephone. If we want to take your application further we'll invite you to meet us for a chat. It's a chance for you to find out more about the role and the organisation and we can get to know you better and find out how we can match your skills and interests with our volunteer opportunities.

We will ask for references for most of our roles. This helps us to confirm the identity of our volunteers and to build a better understanding of them. You will be asked to supply references during the meeting. Here at the YMCA we are committed to using fair, relevant and consistent processes to asses suitability and safety of potential volunteers.

Step 3: Receive Training And Support

All volunteers will have an induction and, if needed, you will also get specific training for your role. Directors are always on hand to provide ongoing help and support during your time volunteering with us.
